day 4, 5 or maybe 3

how's everyone doing? feeling?

i have to admit- i feel pretty good. i haven't had headaches, or problems sleeping, or really noticed any bad differences. i think eating a low carb diet in the past felt more restrictive and harder to follow than the cleanse.

wait- i take that back. pooping. that's a problem. coffee used to get things moving on the regular every morning. now - not so much. i'm just sort of... waiting.

i think its odd that heather from dooce wanted to die by day 4 and quit. maybe if you are super addicted to caffeine, i could see it.

my main problem is gluten. i've noticed in the book (some of you read i think) that she's not terribly clear on what gluten is - and her recipes in the back contain some types of gluten. i've had a whole wheat english muffin, and some whole wheat pita. i imagine these have some type of gluten in them, but oh well. i'm just not crystal clear on the whole gluten thing.

i like being conscience of what i'm eating -- what the ingredients are, where its from, how its made. i think that's the best part so far.

tell me your thoughts --

are you worried about the weekend? are there things you know you're going to have to do differently than usual - or avoid? going to any parties where you'll have to make decisions about being a weirdo or not?

hey yall--

i'm joining your blog. i saw the authors of skinny bitch the other day on ellen and went and bought thier books and was inspired to try it. skinny bitch is basically just being vegan and eating organic when possible...oh yeah and also no caffeine, booze, or unnatural sugars. the authors encourage you to adopt the vegan lifestyle completely forever, but i really just dont know if i can do that, so i'm doing more of a cleanse and just following the regime for about a month, and then i'll see how i feel and if i want to continue. everyone in my fam thinks i'm kinda crazy for doing this, so i was glad to find on here that i am not the only one!

this is my 4th day, and so far i feel really good! i am/was not a coffee addict, but WAS the person who ordered filet at practically every restaraunt and ate sushi thrice per week! i think the most helpful thing is having a good attitude--it's been surprisingly easy for me bc there are so many foods and recipes that i have wanted to try. i munch all day on nuts and peaches so i'm never hungry and focus more on all the things i CAN eat rather than the things that are off limits.

i am not completely sure if my eating regime is exactly the same as yalls, so if ou can please clarify on what sugars you can have and what gluten is and i will switch over to yalls cleanse so that i am in the same boat as all you people!

from wikipedia: Gluten is a composite of the proteins gliadin and glutenin. These exist, conjoined with starch, in the endosperms of some grass-related grains, notably wheat, rye, and barley. Gliadin and glutenin comprise about 80% of the protein contained in wheat seed. Being insoluble in water, they can be purified by washing away the associated starch. Worldwide, gluten is an important source of nutritional protein, both in foods prepared directly from sources containing it, and as an additive to foods otherwise low in protein.

Jamie I think you've not been cutting on gluten. Also, from my friend who is celiac, wheat = gluten i.e. there's no wheat product without gluten.
I found this on a book review in amazon:

BREAKING THE GLUTEN ADDICTION: There are certain peptides, or protein fragments, found in gluten (in grains) and in casein (in milk) that look and act just like the narcotic known as morphine.

I don't know if this is true. I only know I'm craving pizza like hell.

You can make wheat free pizza dough sol! It tastes good. Also some cities have pizza shops that make wheat free, we have like 3 in Salt Lake and my friend Europe says there are a few in some major cities she has lived in.

I think rebecca or whatever her name is is an idiot. Stupid. And I think her doctor is stupider. You cannot get an infection from NOT eating food. Infection comes from BACTERIA. MAYBE if she starved herself for a few WEEKS her body might get stressed out enough to be more easily infected, but your immune system doesn't change in a day from NOT eating shit. Seriously. Some people are just lazy and don't know how to do things right.

Ok, lets talk about this. I am really sick of how stupid people are about cleansing. ALCOHOL. If you are an alcoholic, you will be sick after a few days of doing this cleanse. You will go into withdrawal. If you have a highly addictive personality or you drink over 1 glass of alcohol a night, you will probably feel sick. If you can't go a day or two without alcohol, you probably shouldn't do this cleanse. Also, you might want to talk to your doctor about your drinking patterns to make sure you are ok.

CAFFIENE - If you drink high amounts of caffeine a day you might want to WEAN YOURSELF off caffeine for a week before the cleanse. Some people are highly dependent on caffeine and might not be able to cut it out completely. Just try switching to green tea or CUTTING down on your caffeine intake. Or switching to decaf part of the day.

VEGANISM- Cutting out animal products will NEVER make you sick. As long as you understand how to eat healthy. We evolved as hunter gatherers and less than 1% of our calories up until probably the 1800's for MOST PEOPLE came from 100% PLANT SOURCE and insects. NO ANIMAL PRODUCTS AT ALL. If you are allergic to soy, rice, beans, nuts, you might run into that if you never eat those products and you are switching to a plant based diet. It is 100% healthy, the USDA supports a vegan diet. It is a huge misconception that vegans or vegetarians have any issues with nutrition. Always remember to take supplements if you aren't sure if you are getting enough vitamins no matter WHAT YOUR DIET IS. You are responsible to know what is going into your body every day. You should be educated on this. It will make you feel better if you are balance.

GLUTEN- Gluten is usually used in reference to wheat, although other grains protiens are sometimes referred to as gluten because they make a gluten like (sticky) substance. The reason we are cutting out gluten in this cleanse is because gluten is used in many if not MOST processed foods. The cleanse is trying to get you to cut out PROCESSED FOODS!!! So if you can't cut out bread, try switching to whole wheat (try substitutes tho.. there are tons are wild oats). Gluten is also bad for our bellies, makes us fat and bloated, but thats a whole other issue. Cutting out gluten would never make ANYONE sick.

finally SUGAR. Many many people are addicted to sugar. The reason that so many people are fat is because they are addicted to high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and artificial sweeteners. When you smoke crack, the same receptors are stimulated as when you drink a frappachino (sugar) or eat a cookie. Even artificial sweetners have been shown to mimic sugar in this way. Sugar is processed very fast and makes you hungry and want more sugar (JUST LIKE CRACK!). So sometimes cutting out sugars make you totally insane and you feel like you are in drug withdrawal.

If anything cutting out sugar (after the bitch process is done) will make you LESS able to get an infection. Sugar is bad for you. Make you sick, fat, and crazy.

In conclusion. That girl is spreading misinformation based on her experience. Maybe she is addicted to crap. If you feel bad... try to think about why. If you are FEELING SICK don't go on a diet. Your body is sick because its weak and changing your diet is probably a stupid idea.

Ok. Thats all for now. Hope everyone is feeling ok!

re: Gluten
What about wheat germ? As I understand it, it is just the vitamin part of the wheat plant once the bread-making parts are shaken off and bleached to be bread products. My original food plan (which I've done for most of the last 6 years) doesn't allow grains of any kind and it considers wheat germ a veggie.

Again, my diet coke addiction is nearly killing me. Last night my whole head and neck hurt and I wanted to kill someone. Plus, I was a real smokin' bitch to my honey. But still, no diet coke.

oh. i'm eating no sugars. No agave, no honey, no nothing.

so gluten -- i see now.

i think i'm going to cut out all processed things, like breads, etc.

but i'm going to eat whole wheat english muffins. and some whole wheat pitas.
that's still no meat, no dairy, no sugar, no caff, no alcohol, and no processed shit.

do you hate me?

and hi mary! cleanse with us!

and JJ i did have agave nectar this am. and acai juice. and i'm having real maple syrup this weekend.

i'm just having natural sugars i guess. same stuff that's in fruit?

natural sugars from fruit and stuff like that are ok for you. you just have to eat them balanced. one thing this cleanse doesn't really talk about is nutrition. because there is so much to learn.

so basically if you are really hungry and have a headache cause you cant down 10 diet cokes then you would think.. maybe fruit would help.. its sweet! but... it might give you a big sugar spike and another crash.

I FEEL the best thing i can do for myself is eat protein. like nuts, some edamame, a protein shake, some fake chickn strips. it makes me feel full and happy.

What you are really interested in the glycemic index of a food (check out that nutrition page for info). You want to aim for a level of below 100 a day. Cutting out refined sugars and processed foods is an awesome way to start. One you cut those out, you can probably stay below 100 per day. However, if you are someone that eats tons of carbs and fruits all day during this cleanse, you might feel like shit because your glycemic load is still pretty high.

So you might want to make all your snacks be HIGH PROTEIN snacks like those i mentioned above. Even celery with peanut butter would be a good one.

A big part of this cleanse is figuring out what your body needs. I will write about blog about glycemic index by this weekend so you can understand it better. Even tho I understand it sometimes after I work out I am like running through the house looking for food like a crazy person screaming "EAT NOW WHat can i EAT!?!?" Its hard to remember so I make a little list and put it on my fridge so when my brain stops working I can remember what to eat.

Also, another thing is if you go really fast from a normal diet to NO SUGAR AT ALL, even cutting out high natural sugar foods like lots of veggies, fruits, and grains you might feel like a giant butthole. Yea, its good for you but its more severe than just cutting out processed foods and refined sugars. And its really hard!

Its a hard balance to find. Good luck.

Also jamie I think its fine you are eating whole wheat, as long as you try to cut out processed foods and MAYBE you can try some other options (spelt bread, ezikeil bread and tortillas, corn products, oat products, quinoa, etc).
